Job Description – Virgin Media Pre-Enablement & Civils Engineer

Job Purpose
The Pre-Enablement / Civils Engineer is responsible for preparing and maintaining the external telecommunications network to enable successful customer installations on the Virgin Media network.
The role involves identifying and resolving issues that prevent or delay installation, completing pre-enablement activities and, where required, undertaking civils works to provide a clear and serviceable route to the customer premises.
Key Responsibilities – Pre-Enablement
- Attend allocated pre-enablement jobs ahead of scheduled customer installations.
- Assess the existing network route from the distribution point to the customer premises.
- Rod, rope and prove underground duct routes.
- Complete cable pre-pulls where required.
- Identify blocked, damaged, collapsed or otherwise unusable ducts.
- Identify access issues and other obstacles that could prevent successful installation.
- Carry out minor remedial works within the engineer's permitted scope.
- Ensure routes are prepared correctly for the installation engineer.
- Escalate jobs requiring additional civils or specialist intervention.
- Accurately record work completed, outstanding issues and required remedial action.
- Submit photographs and other job evidence where required.
- Ensure work areas are left safe, secure and tidy.
Key Responsibilities – Civils
- Complete telecommunications civils works required to create, repair or restore network routes.
- Excavate safely around existing underground utilities.
- Locate and expose existing telecommunications ducts.
- Repair, replace and install ducting where required.
- Clear duct blockages and obstructions.
- Undertake chamber and joint-box works.
- Install new sections of duct and associated infrastructure.
- Complete track, trench and associated excavation works.
- Carry out appropriate backfill and reinstatement following works.
- Ensure completed routes are suitable for subsequent cable installation.
- Work in accordance with permits, Street Works requirements and site-specific instructions.
- Maintain appropriate signing, lighting and guarding around works.
- Complete all required job records and photographic evidence.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
The engineer is responsible for maintaining safe working practices at all times, including:
- Compliance with NRSWA / Street Works requirements.
- Correct use of signing, lighting and guarding.
- Safe excavation practices.
- Identification of underground services before excavation.
- Correct use and inspection of tools and equipment.
- Appropriate use of PPE.
- Maintaining a safe working area for colleagues, customers and members of the public.
- Reporting hazards, incidents, near misses and network damage promptly.
Essential Requirements
- Valid Street Works / NRSWA qualification.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Ability to undertake physically demanding outdoor work.
- Competence working around underground telecommunications infrastructure.
- Ability to follow job packs, work instructions and network specifications.
- Ability to work independently and manage an allocated workload.
- Good communication and customer-facing skills.
- Accurate completion of job records and evidence.
Experience
Previous experience in telecommunications civils, pre-enablement, cabling or underground network work is preferred.
Experience working on the Virgin Media network would be advantageous.

- Minimise repeat visits and failed installations through accurate pre-enablement.
- Provide accurate information when additional works are required.
